PERSONAL NOTES
Took an ailing Tiger Woods to 19 holes in a Monday playoff last June at Torrey Pines before making a bogey on the first sudden-death hole. His second-place showing was his best finish in 13 U.S. Open appearances
Started using long putter to ease chronic back issues and became first to win a PGA Tour event with that implement at 1991 Doral-Ryder Open
Owns five PGA Tour victories, the last coming at 2002 Greater Greensboro Classic
With help from Champions Tour member Jim Feree during college, Mediate developed a swing good enough to compete on the PGA Tour
Also credits his Florida Southern coach, Charlie Matlock, for influencing his career
Has competed in the World Series of Poker and done some work as an on-course commentator for The Golf Channel
